How do you celebrate a birthday in a long-distance relationship?

A long-distance birthday works best when you settle three things a week ahead: when you send the first wishes, counted in your partner's time zone; one thing you do together on a video call; and what arrives by post, sent early enough to be there on the day. Everything else can stay flexible.

Gift lists are easy to find. What usually goes wrong is the timing: wishes that arrive while they are asleep, a call that clashes with their dinner with friends, or a package that turns up a week late. The sections below go through each of those decisions in order.

  • Work out when it is midnight for them in your own time zone.
  • Book one call on the day and put it in both calendars in local time.
  • Pick one shared activity for the call instead of a full virtual party.
  • Post anything physical early, and plan a message for the day itself.

What time should I wish them happy birthday if we're in different time zones?

Send the first message when it turns midnight on their clock, not yours. If your partner is ahead of you, that moment falls on the day before for you, often in the afternoon or evening; the table above shows common city pairs. If they are behind you, their birthday starts after yours, so a message at your midnight would arrive a day early.

Check the date itself, not today's gap. The US and Europe change clocks on different dates in March and in October or November, so for a few weeks the gap between New York and London is 4 hours instead of 5. Countries such as India, the Philippines, and South Korea do not change their clocks at all, which is why the gap to them moves by an hour between January and July. The World Clock in the iPhone Clock app shows your partner's local time if you add their city.

If their midnight is the middle of your night, you do not have to stay up. Messages on iPhone can schedule a text to send later, so you can write it in the evening and let it arrive at their midnight. Then make the call itself at a time that suits both of you.

What can we do together on a birthday video call?

Choose one activity, not a schedule. A long call with nothing planned tends to drift; one shared thing gives it a start and an end. FaceTime's SharePlay lets you watch, listen, and play together during a call, as long as both of you can open the same app.

  • Eat the same meal or the same cake at the same time.
  • Open the gifts you sent live on camera.
  • Watch a film you both chose in advance with SharePlay.
  • Play a short game; HeartSee, our app, has rounds such as This or That and You or Me.
  • Look back through photos from your last visit together.
  • Read out a list of things you love about them, written in advance.
  • Join their party for ten minutes to say hello to their friends.
  • End by naming one thing you will do together on their next birthday.

What should I send so it arrives on time?

Something small that arrives before the day says more than a large box that comes a week late. Post it well ahead, and earlier still for international mail. Carriers set their own delivery times, so check your carrier's site for the route rather than relying on a general rule. Customs can delay parcels and restrict food sent abroad, so check the destination country's rules before you pack anything edible.

If a parcel might arrive early, mark it "do not open until" with the date, or ask them to save it for your call. If it is late, open the tracking together and turn it into a second, smaller celebration.

  • A handwritten card or letter to open on the day.
  • A printed photo from a trip you took together.
  • A small item that links to the activity on your call, such as the same snack or candle.
  • A note with a plan or a date for your next visit.

How do I plan a birthday surprise from far away?

Most surprises from a distance need someone on the ground. Ask one of their friends, a roommate, or a family member to help, and keep the plan simple: a delivery to the door, a cake at the office, or a dinner they organize while you join on video.

You can also collect short video messages from their friends and family and send them as one file on the morning of the birthday. Ask people at least a week in advance, give them a deadline, and keep each clip short. Avoid surprises that need your partner to be at a certain place at a certain time unless someone nearby can make sure they are.

What if we can't call on the day?

Work shifts, exams, travel, or a big time difference can make a call on the day impossible. Say so early and pick a second date for the real celebration, ideally within a few days. A birthday moved to the weekend with a proper plan feels better than a rushed call on the day.

On the day itself, make sure something reaches them: the scheduled message at their midnight, the parcel, or a short voice note they can play when they have a minute. Agree beforehand that a missed call is not a sign of anything, so nobody spends the day waiting.

How do we keep the day in view before the birthday?

A countdown helps when the date is fixed, and a birthday always is. Our free countdown tool counts the days and hours to any date and time you enter, in your browser. HeartSee puts small widgets on the iPhone Home Screen, including a shared mood, a note from your partner, and a countdown to a date, as in the screenshot above. iOS decides when widgets refresh, so treat a widget as a gentle reminder, not a live feed.

If the birthday is also close to a visit, count down to the visit instead. A birthday is also a good moment to look at how long you have been together, in days as well as years.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

How do you celebrate your partner's birthday in a long-distance relationship?

Send your first wishes at midnight in their time zone, book one call on the day with a shared activity such as a meal, a film, or a game, post a card or small gift early, and if you can, ask a friend nearby to help with a surprise.

Should I wish my long-distance partner happy birthday at my midnight or theirs?

At theirs. Their birthday starts when it is midnight where they are. If that is the middle of your night, write the message in the evening and schedule it to send later in Messages on iPhone.

What time is it in New York when it is midnight in London?

7 pm the evening before for most of the year. For a few weeks in March and in late October or early November, when the US and the UK change clocks on different dates, it is 8 pm.

What can we do on a birthday video call?

Pick one thing: eat the same cake at the same time, open the gifts you sent live, watch a film together with SharePlay, play a short couples game, or look back through photos from your last visit.

What if the birthday present doesn't arrive in time?

Post early and track it. If it is late, tell your partner it is on the way, open it together on a call when it arrives, and make sure a card, message, or voice note still reaches them on the day.
