What is a long-distance advent calendar?

A long-distance advent calendar gives your partner one small thing each day from 1 to 24 December, even when you are apart. Mix three kinds: a few envelopes you mail ahead in one parcel, digital surprises that need no shipping, and some moments you share on video. The 24 ideas above cost little, and most work across time zones.

In 2026, 1 December is a Tuesday and Christmas Eve is a Thursday, so the plan puts the video days on weekends and Friday evenings, when an overlap is easier to find. The first mailed envelope is on day 4, which leaves a few days of slack if the parcel arrives late.

These are our own ideas from the HeartSee team. HeartSee, the couples app that publishes this blog, comes up twice below; every idea also works without it.

  • Digital (10 days): voice messages, photos, a playlist, scheduled texts, a doodle.
  • Mailed (7 envelopes): small, flat things that fit in one parcel.
  • On video (7 days): things you do at the same time, such as baking, a film, or a walk.
  • Christmas Eve: the last envelope, opened together on a call.

How do you make a digital advent calendar for your partner?

Prepare the 10 digital days in one evening, then send one a day. Record the voice messages and the bedtime story in advance, pick the photos, and write the texts. On iPhone, Messages can schedule a text to send later, so a note can arrive with your partner's morning even if you are asleep.

A digital surprise does not have to live in the chat. HeartSee's App Store listing says you can send a mood, a note, or a doodle straight to your partner's Home Screen, and version 1.10.6 notifies them when you do. A doodle drawn the night before is waiting on the widget when they pick up the phone, which is why day 8 works in any time zone. Other apps do the same in different ways; our comparison lists nine.

What goes in a mailed advent box, and when should you send it?

Choose small, flat, light things and number the envelopes, so your partner knows which one to open on which day. A letter, a printed photo, a tea or cocoa sachet, a keyring, and a voucher for the next visit all fit in one parcel. Seven envelopes are enough; the digital and video days fill the rest.

Carriers publish holiday cut-off dates for Christmas delivery, not for 1 December, so count back from day 4 using the delivery time your carrier quotes for the destination. Our own suggestion is to post a parcel that crosses a border by about 20 November. Check the destination's customs rules before you include food. If the parcel will be late, start with the digital days and open the envelopes when it arrives.

How do you handle the time difference?

Time each surprise for the moment your partner will see it, not the moment you send it. Most digital ideas in the table work at any hour: a scheduled text, a voice message, or a doodle on the widget waits until they wake up. The video days are the ones that need planning, so agree the call times for the whole month at the start, written in both local times.

If your overlap is short on weekdays, move the video ideas to weekends and swap them with a digital day. With a gap of half a day or more, keep one fixed weekly call and let the rest of the calendar run without one. A widget with your partner's local time helps you see at a glance whether they are awake.

Which advent ideas can we do together on a call?

Choose activities you do at the same time rather than calls about your day. Baking the same recipe, decorating, wrapping gifts, or walking past the lights in your town all give a call a start and an end. FaceTime's SharePlay lets you watch, listen, and play together during a call, as long as both of you can open the same app.

A short game works on evenings when you are both tired. HeartSee has rounds such as This or That and You or Me, and plenty of games need nothing but a list of questions.

What if one of us misses a day?

Open two the next day. An advent calendar is a small daily signal, not a test, so agree at the start that a missed day means nothing. If you like the rhythm of doing something every day, HeartSee version 1.10.6 added a shared streak that grows when you both answer, with a free freeze for one missed day.

After 24 December the calendar ends, but the holidays do not. On New Year's Eve your midnights arrive at different times, so it is worth agreeing which one you share before the calendar runs out.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

What do you put in a long-distance advent calendar?

Mix small mailed items, such as a letter, a printed photo, a tea sachet, or a voucher for the next visit, with digital surprises like voice messages and scheduled texts, and a few activities you do together on video, such as baking the same recipe or watching a film.

How do you do an advent calendar long distance without shipping anything?

Make it fully digital: one voice message, photo, song, scheduled text, or doodle a day, plus a few video calls with a shared activity. You can prepare most of it in one evening and send it day by day.

When should I send an advent calendar to my long-distance partner?

Early enough to arrive before the first mailed day. Check the delivery time your carrier quotes for the destination; our own suggestion is to post an international parcel by about 20 November and to check customs rules before sending food.

Can I make a virtual advent calendar for my boyfriend or girlfriend?

Yes. Prepare 24 small digital surprises, such as voice messages, photos, playlist songs, notes, and doodles, and schedule or send one each day from 1 to 24 December. Add a few video calls for things you do together.

What if my partner is in a different time zone?

Use ideas that wait for them, such as scheduled texts, voice messages, or a note or doodle on their Home Screen, and keep the video days for weekends. Agree the call times for December in both local times at the start.
