How do you celebrate New Year's Eve in a long-distance relationship?
When you live in different time zones, New Year's Eve has two midnights, and the partner further east reaches it first. Decide three things in advance: which midnight you share live, when you call in both local times, and one thing you do together on video. Then use the first call of the year to set your next date.
On 31 December 2026, a Thursday, the gap between the two midnights ranges from 1 hour for London and Warsaw to 19 hours for Sydney and Los Angeles, as the table above shows. Find your pair, or the closest one, before either of you makes plans with friends.
- Work out both midnights in each other's local time.
- Pick the midnight you share live, and keep a short call or message for the other.
- Choose one thing to do together on the call.
- Agree what happens if one of you is at a party or asleep.
- Finish with a date, or at least a month, for your next visit.
What time is midnight for both of us?
The partner further east always reaches midnight first. If one of you is in London and the other in New York, London's midnight arrives at 7 pm in New York, and New York's midnight arrives at 5 am in London. Between New York and Los Angeles the gap is 3 hours. Sydney reaches the new year while it is still early afternoon on 31 December in London.
Work it out for 31 December itself, not from today's gap. In winter the US and Europe are on standard time while Sydney is on daylight saving time, which is why Sydney is 11 hours ahead of London on New Year's Eve but 9 hours ahead in July. India, the Philippines, and South Korea do not change their clocks. If your city is not in the table, add your partner's city to the World Clock in the iPhone Clock app and check the time there.

Should we celebrate at my midnight or yours?
You do not have to choose. Our suggestion is to celebrate both but give them different weight: a short call or video message at the first midnight, and a longer call at the second, when the partner who has already celebrated can relax and join the other's countdown.
Check what each midnight means on the other side first. If the second midnight lands at 5 am for the partner further east, a live call is a lot to ask, so share the first midnight live and send a message for the second. If both midnights fall in the evening for both of you, as between New York and Los Angeles, you can share both. With a gap of half a day or more, pick one time that suits you both and treat it as your midnight together.
What can we do on a New Year's Eve video call?
Plan one or two things, not a whole evening. A call with nothing planned tends to drift, while one shared activity gives it a start and an end. FaceTime's SharePlay lets you watch, listen, and play together during a call, as long as both of you can open the same app.
- Count down together to the first midnight, then again to the second.
- Pick the same drink in advance and raise it for the toast.
- Watch a film you both chose with SharePlay, timed to end at midnight.
- Play a short couples game; HeartSee, our app, has rounds such as This or That and You or Me.
- Scroll through photos from 2026 and each pick a favorite.
- Write down three highlights of the year each and read them out.
- Name one thing you want to do together in 2027.

What if one of us is at a party?
That is normal and does not have to be a problem. Agree on a fixed time to step outside for five minutes, counted in the party-goer's local time, and keep that call short. The partner at home can plan their own evening instead of waiting by the phone.
If the party falls at the other partner's midnight, a video message recorded earlier still reaches them on time. Messages on iPhone can schedule a text to send later, so you can write it while it is quiet and let it arrive at their midnight. Agree beforehand that a missed call on a loud night means nothing, so nobody starts the year feeling forgotten.
How do we plan the year ahead together?
The first call of the new year is a good moment to look ahead. Keep it practical: when you will see each other next, what has to happen first, such as time off, tickets, or saving money, and one or two things you want to do together even from far away.
Once the next visit has a real date, put it where you both see it. Our free countdown tool counts the days and hours to any date and time you enter, in your own browser. If you want a small daily habit for the new year, HeartSee version 1.10.6 added a shared streak that grows when you both answer, with a free freeze for one missed day. If you are also apart for Christmas, the same planning works a week earlier.
