Are there free apps for long-distance couples on iPhone?

Yes, but most couple apps are freemium: free to download and pair, with Premium for the extras. Of the six we checked, only Couple Pulse and Long Goodbye spell out what the free tier includes. For a fully free setup, FaceTime, Find My, and the Clock widget are built into iPhone, and Signal is free.

The table shows what each App Store listing says is free, what it says needs Premium, and whether one subscription covers both of you. Where a listing does not split free and paid features, we say so instead of guessing.

How was this comparison made?

HeartSee publishes this article and is one of the six couple apps. No app paid to be included and there are no affiliate links. Every fact comes from the US App Store listings, their release notes and, for Android, the developer's own site, checked on 29 October 2026; we did not install and test each app. "Not listed" means the listing does not mention it, not that the app cannot do it.

We left out two apps that appear in searches for free long-distance apps: Love Letter: Between Couples and Long Distance Relationship Pro. Neither had a US App Store listing available on 29 October 2026.

  • Does the listing say what you can do without paying?
  • What does it say needs Premium?
  • Does one subscription unlock both partners?
  • Does it run on Android, and which iOS version does it need?

Which couples apps have a real free tier?

Couple Pulse has the clearest free tier. Its listing has a separate section for what you can do for free: daily questions, limited quizzes and games, a relationship counter widget for the Lock Screen, drawing together, and saving heartbeat recordings. Premium adds live heartbeat sharing, the full set of 3,000+ questions, and premium widgets. It is newer, with 12 ratings, and needs iOS 17.6.

Long Goodbye says its free tier covers "pairing, their time, taps, widgets and one countdown", which is enough to see your partner's local time and send a quick tap. Together+ adds drawings on the Lock Screen, a photo and together-for count, more countdowns, and audio postcards. It had 3 ratings on 29 October 2026.

The other four do not split free and paid features in their listings. FeelClose names only what Premium unlocks: sealing a photo until a date, After Dark questions, and twelve more nudges. Couple Joy, Lovendi, and HeartSee are free to download with Premium purchases, but their listings do not say which features are free, so try the free version together before either of you starts a trial.

Which free couples app has a distance widget?

Five listings mention distance: Couple Joy, whose release notes describe a distance widget above the time on the Lock Screen; Couple Pulse, with a Lock Screen Distance Widget that needs location access; Lovendi; HeartSee, with Home and Lock Screen widgets; and Long Goodbye, in its subtitle. None of them says whether showing distance is part of the free tier.

So check it in the first few minutes: pair, add the distance widget, and see whether the app asks you to upgrade. If you only need to know where your partner is, Find My can share locations between two iPhones for free, and either of you can stop sharing at any time.

Does one subscription cover both partners?

In four of the six, yes. Couple Pulse says that if either partner has Premium, both get the shared Premium features while you stay linked. Long Goodbye says one purchase covers both of you. FeelClose's release notes say "One purchase covers both of you", and HeartSee's release notes say one subscription covers both partners, with a 7-day free trial.

Couple Joy and Lovendi do not say either way on their listings, so ask before both of you pay. In every case, the person who subscribes is the one billed by Apple and the one who has to cancel.

Which completely free apps work for long-distance couples?

You can cover the basics without a couples app. FaceTime handles calls, Find My can share your location with each other, a shared album in Photos keeps pictures in one place, and Apple's Clock widget shows your partner's city time on your Home or Lock Screen.

Two free apps fill the remaining gaps. Signal is a free messenger from a nonprofit, "supported by your donations, not by advertisers or investors", with an optional $1.99 Secure Backups purchase. TimeTree is a free shared calendar for visits and call times; its Premium removes ads and adds an hourly calendar and file attachments. Our next-meeting countdown also runs in the browser for free, with no account.

When is paying for a couples app worth it?

Pay when the free version has become a daily habit for both of you and one paid feature would change how you use it. If you are still deciding whether you will open the app at all, stay on the free tier. Before a trial, put the end date in your calendar, because a yearly plan renews automatically.

  • Couple Joy: the most-rated couples app here, with 4.9 from about 40 thousand ratings, and on Android. Skip it if you want to know what is free before you install; the listing does not say.
  • Couple Pulse: the clearest free tier, with questions, games, drawing, and a Lock Screen counter. Skip it if either iPhone runs a version older than iOS 17.6.
  • Lovendi: Home Screen widgets and distance, with a single $2.99 Premium purchase. Skip it if you want an app with ratings to read; it had none to show.
  • FeelClose: questions, nudges, and countdown widgets, and one purchase covers both of you. Skip it if either iPhone runs a version older than iOS 17.0.
  • HeartSee (our app): a private space for two with distance, moods, notes, drawings, daily games, and Home and Lock Screen widgets. Skip it if one of you uses Android.
  • Long Goodbye: your partner's local time, taps, and a countdown for free. Skip it if you prefer an app with more ratings; it had 3.

What do free couples apps collect?

A free app still has to pay for itself, so read the App Privacy section before you share photos or location. Developers fill it in and Apple does not verify it. HeartSee's and Lovendi's listings also note that they contain advertising. This is what the US listings showed on 29 October 2026.

  • Couple Joy: purchases, identifiers, and usage data used to track you; location, contact info, photos, and more linked to you.
  • Couple Pulse: purchases, identifiers, usage data, and other data used to track you; health and fitness, location, contact info, and photos linked to you.
  • FeelClose: nothing used to track you; email, photos, a user ID, usage data, and diagnostics linked to you.
  • HeartSee: identifiers used to track you; purchases, name, user content, and a device ID linked to you; precise location not linked to you.
  • Long Goodbye: email, name, photos, and a user ID linked to you; no data used to track you was listed.
  • Lovendi: usage data used to track you; usage and crash data not linked to you.
  • Signal: only a phone number, not linked to you.
  • TimeTree: identifiers and usage data used to track you; location, contact info, user content, and more linked to you.
